India found themselves in a precarious position in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 final against Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, November 19. The Men in Blue, known for their impressive batting performances throughout the tournament, struggled to contain the pressure of the pivotal encounter after being asked to bat first.

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, a consistent performer at the top order, started the innings on a blazing note, smashing 47 runs off just 31 deliveries, which included four fours and three sixes. However, the early loss of Shubman Gill, a player with a remarkable record in Ahmedabad, to Mitchell Starc for just 4 runs set the tone for a challenging innings.

Former captain Virat Kohli entered the crease with intent, but the momentum took a hit when Rohit Sharma fell three runs short of his half-century, courtesy of a spectacular catch by Travis Head off Glenn Maxwell’s bowling. Pat Cummins further dented India’s progress by dismissing the in-form Shreyas Iyer in the subsequent over.

Brilliant bowling performance by Australia

As the boundaries dried up after the 10th over, Kohli and KL Rahul attempted to stabilize the Indian innings. However, the Australian bowlers, led by Mitchell Starc, continued to apply pressure, and Kohli eventually departed after scoring 54 runs off 63 deliveries to Cummins. Rahul, holding one end together, managed to notch up a half-century, but India suffered another setback when Ravindra Jadeja fell in the 36th over.

With Rahul as the anchor, Suryakumar Yadav joined him in what seemed to be the last stand of recognized batters for India. Just when it appeared that the duo might change the momentum, Rahul succumbed to Starc’s bowling, departing after scoring 66 runs off 107 deliveries. Suryakumar also failed to provide the finishing touch as India ended up scoring just 240 runs.

As the contest reached a crucial juncture, India’s hopes now rested on the shoulders of the bowlers to challenge the Australian team in the pursuit of the coveted ODI World Cup title.
