On 28 August 2023, Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) took on St Kitts and Nevis Patriots (SKN) in the 12th match of the ongoing Caribbean Premier League (CPL). However, TKR won the game by six wickets but what hit the headlines was that Sunil Narine received a red card during the game.

Eventually, it was the first ever red card to get used after its introduction this season. Earlier this season, CPL confirmed implementing red cards of removing a player due to slow over-rate in both Men’s and Women’s competitions. The main motive was to tackle the slow over-rate issues during a match.

Here is the shared video:

Sunil Narine grabbed three wickets in his four overs

According to the proposed rule, if a team is behind the required over rate at the start of the 18th over, then, they have to bring a player inside the 30-yard circle. One player needs to come inside again if the same thing continues before the start of the 19th over. Then, before the last over, if it remains the same, then, a player will be shown a red card whom the fielding side’s skipper will choose. The team need to field with 10 players on the field. So, during the TKR vs SKN clash, SKN were 140 runs for four wickets after 17 overs.

But after 18 overs, the umpire asked TKR to bring one player inside the circle due to their slow over rate. Then, before the final over, they were lagging in over rate and hence, the umpire came up with the red card. However, Pollard might have taken Narine’s name and therefore, the TKR all-rounder received the card. Speaking of the match, SKN batted first and set a 179-run target. But, TKR chased that down easily in 17.1 overs and registered their first victory of this season. Narine had a good game with the bowl as he took three wickets for 24 runs in four overs.
