BCCI Review Meeting Focuses on Kohli and Rohit’s Future

BCCI’s selection committee met on Saturday to finalize India’s T20I squad for the England series. However, the future of senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma also took center stage.

According to the Hindustan Times, the meeting, attended by head coach Gautam Gambhir, BCCI officials, and newly-elected ICC Chairman Jay Shah, focused on the underperformance of the senior batters. Both players faced severe criticism following India’s whitewash by New Zealand and a 1-3 loss to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Rohit’s Declining Test Form Raises Concerns

Rohit Sharma’s poor performance in recent Test matches has sparked concerns within the BCCI. The 37-year-old managed just 164 runs in the last eight Test matches, with only one fifty. His average of 6.2 in Australia raised alarm bells, with selectors worried about his declining graph in Test cricket.

However, BCCI officials have left it up to the selectors to make a final decision regarding Rohit’s future. The captain, despite expressing confidence, will likely make a decision when the time is right.

Kohli’s Fate Hinges on Shubman Gill’s Performance

Virat Kohli’s future also hangs in the balance, with his recent form under scrutiny. His performance in the series against Australia and New Zealand has been subpar, apart from a century in Perth. With the upcoming England tour in late June, Kohli’s fate depends on how Shubman Gill performs in the next few months.

Despite expectations, Gill has struggled to settle into the role once held by Kohli. His poor performance against Australia, scoring just 93 runs in five innings, has added pressure on his position in the team. Since his breakthrough tour in 2020/21, Gill’s form outside Asia has been questionable.

Selectors’ Decision Pending on Both Players

The BCCI selectors are likely to take their time before forming an opinion on Kohli and Rohit. With the England series still months away, the committee will closely monitor Gill’s form to assess whether he is ready to step into Kohli’s shoes.

Conclusion

The fate of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma remains uncertain as their form continues to be under scrutiny. BCCI’s careful consideration will shape India’s Test team for the future.
