India’s opening batter Shikhar Dhawan has been granted divorce from his wife and visitation rights for his son. The 2013 Champions Trophy winner has been granted divorce citing mental torture from his wife, Ayesha Mukherjee. The couple has been estranged since July 2021. This happened right after India’s second-string side played a white-ball series in Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, a family court in Delhi heard the case of the couple’s case. Dhawan’s allegation of mental torture by his now-estranged wife has been accepted by Judge Harish Kumar. On the other hand, Mukherjee didn’t contest the allegations. Apparently, the mental torture was stated citing Ayesha keeping their son away from Dhawan. However, Mukherjee, an Australian citizen said that she can’t live in India.

“He (Dhawan) for no fault of his own had been through immense agony and anguish of living separately from his own son for years. Even though the wife denied the allegation, submitting that though she genuinely wanted to live in India with him, however, due to her commitment towards her daughters from her previous marriage requiring her to stay in Australia, she could not come to live in India and that he was well aware of her commitment, yet she did not choose to contest the claim,” the judge noted.

The judge added that it has been proved that Ayesha assured to set up a matrimonial home in India. However, she didn’t live up to her expectations.

“Hence, it stands proved that the wife backtracked from her assurance of setting up matrimonial home in India after marriage and thus made him suffer a long distance marriage and suffer immense agony and anguish of living separately from his own son for years.”
