Yashasvi Jaiswal had a dream debut for the Indian National Team in the longest format of the game. Not only did he score a century on his debut, his 171 off 387 is the third-highest score on debut by any Indian. Jaiswal managed to score 17 boundaries including a maximum in his blistering knock on debut. His opening stand with Rohit Sharma that yielded India 229 runs is the second-highest partnership for India against the West Indies.

Jaiswal broke a series of records with his memorable debut. Notably, he became the 17th Indian to score a hundred on debut. The last batter to achieve the feat was Shreyas Iyer against New Zealand in 2021. What’s special about his ton is that it made him the 7th Indian and the first in 13 years to accomplish the feat away from home. Suresh Raina was the last player to score a century on debut away from home against Sri Lanka. After Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan, Jaiswal is the third opener who scored a century on their Test debut. Jaiswal played 387 balls on his debut which broke the previously held national record of 322 by Mohammed Azharuddin in 1984.

‘I talked a lot to Rohit bhaiya’ – Yashasvi Jaiswal after his century

“I talked a lot to Rohit bhaiya. He was telling me how to play on this wicket. He kept telling me, ‘You have to do it. You’re the only person who can do it’. I also kept thinking the same. I’ve learned a lot from this game and I will try to continue with the same intensity,” Jaiswal said after scoring his maiden Test century on debut.

Thanks to Jaiswal’s masterful knock, India find themselves in a commanding position in the first Test of the series against the West Indies. Following the centuries by the two openers, India lost Shubman Gill (6 off 11) and Ajinkya Rahane (3 off 11) cheaply. However, Virat Kohli is out there holding an end having completed his 29th half-century in Test. Earlier, India had bowled West Indies out for 150 with India’s spins twins Ravichandran Ashwin (5/60) and Ravindra Jadeja (3/26) leading the carnage.
