India and West Indies clashed against each other in the 1st match of the 5-match T20I series at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad on Thursday, August 3. The Men in Blue displayed a poor batting performance and lost the match by 4 runs.

Talking about the match, West Indies won the toss and opted to bat first. Openers Brandon King provided a great start to the team, however, Yuzvendra Chahal came to bowl the 5th over of the first innings and sent both the Windies’ openers back to the pavilion. Both of his wickets came by LBW.

Kuldeep Yadav got rid of Johnson Charles in the 8th over. Charles was struggling and finding it difficult to make the connection well. He scored only 3 runs off 6 balls. However, wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran and captain Rovman Powell steadied the ship and accelerated the scoring rate of the team.

Pooran scored 41 runs off 34 balls which included 2 four and as many sixes. Having scored 48, Powell was looking great until Arshdeep Singh dismissed him in the 19th over. He smashed 3 fours and as many sixes. However, his innings helped the team to achieve a fighting total of 149 runs in 20 overs.

Brilliant bowling performance by West Indies

Arshdeep and Chahal took 2 wickets each while skipper Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep picked up 1 wicket each. Chasing the target, India had a horrible start after they lost both their openers Shubman Gill (3 off 9) and Ishan Kishan (6 off 9) inside the powerplay. However, later Suryakumar Yadab and debutant Tilak Varma stitched a much-needed 39-run stand for the 3rd wicket.

Suryakumar’s struggling knock of 21 runs came to an end in the 10 over. Tilak also went back to the pavilion in the very next over. He played a brilliant knock of 39 runs off just 22 deliveries which included 2 fours and 3 sixes. Skipper Pandya and Samosn were looking to end the match but were unable to do it as Windies restricted the Indian team on the score of 145 runs.
