Australia edged past England by 33 runs to win their fifth match of the ODI World Cup 2023. It was the fifth consecutive win of Australia in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023. A collective team performance from Australia helped them to claim the big win against England. The defending champions did put up a fight. But it was over when they started their fightback in the match.

Winning the toss, England’s captain Jos Buttler opted to bowl first. His decision was proven right, as the two-paced nature of the wicket was perfectly exploited by their pacers early in the innings. Chris Woakes got rid of the in-form openers of Australia. Within the Powerplay overs, Woakes dismissed both Warner and Head. It gave a big lead to England but did not remain for a long time.

Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne framed a good partnership to revive the Australian innings. Smith scored 44 runs in 52 balls. Labuschagne was the pick of the batters with a score of 71(83). Cameron Green and Marcus Stoinis played impactful knocks towards the end. But the momentum booster was provided by Adam Zampa, who scored a quickfire 29(19), that changed the complexion of the game.

Exceptional spell from Adam Zampa with the ball for Australia

Defending 287, Australia got the two big wickets of Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root early. In the middle overs, Zampa bowled a sensational spell. In his 10 overs, the leg spinner conceded just 21 runs and claimed 3 big wickets. Apart from claiming the wicket of a dangerous Buttler, Zampa dismissed the two set batters Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali, who threatened to take the game away from Australia.

The lower-order batters of England tried their best to revive the innings of England. From 186/7 at one stage, the tailenders got England close to the target. But it was not enough. Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid, and David Willey tried their best. But the lack of contribution from the top-order batters cost England the match. With the win, Australia strengthened their chances of claiming the semifinal spot in the tournament.
