India won the third Test against England by a huge margin of 434 runs. It turned out to be India’s biggest win in the history of Test cricket. To claim the win despite not featuring some key players like Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Mohammed Shami, and Axar Patel is a great feat. With the win, India has a lead of 2-1 in the series. The last two Tests of the series are set to take place at Ranchi and Dharamshala respectively.  

For the first time in the history of the longest format of the game, India won a Test match by more than 400 runs. The domination of India was visible on the fourth day of the match, where both the batters and the bowlers were all over the visiting side. It is time to look at some of the biggest wins of India in the longest format of the game in terms of the number of runs.

10. 279 runs against England in Leeds, 1986

The match between India and England happened on the 19th of June in 1986. For only the second time in history, India won the series in England. The win at Headingly in Leeds was crucial for India which paved the way for their series win. India did not just beat England in their backyard but did it convincingly by a margin of 279 runs.  

9. 280 runs against South Africa in Kanpur, 1996

The match between India and South Africa happened on the 8th of December in 1996. The biggest win of India before this was the one against England. For the first time in the history of the sport, India won a Test series against South Africa. At Kanpur, India registered their biggest Test win at home, a record that would remain intact for 12 years. India won the match by 280 runs. 

8. 304 runs against Sri Lanka in Galle, 2017

India and Sri Lanka faced each other at Galle on the 26th of July in 2017. Having won the historical series in 2015, India were termed the favourite to win the series in 2017. The visiting side lived up to the expectations and clean-swept SL 3-0. The biggest win of them all was in Galle. The visiting side won the Test match by a huge margin of 304 runs.

India and England faced each other at Chennai on the 13th of February in 2021. Having lost the first match of the series at the same venue, India needed to make a stern comeback in the series. Under the back of Rohit Sharma’s hundred, India did not just win the Test at Chennai by 317 runs but won the last two Tests of the series in Ahmedabad to win the series 3-1. 

6. 318 runs against the West Indies in North Sound, 2019

India toured the West Indies for a 2-match series in 2019. The 2nd match of the series took place at North Stand on the 22nd of August in 2019. Having won the first match of the series, India dominated the series further by winning the 2nd Test. They did it in some style as the home side was humiliated in their backyard by a margin of 318 runs.  

5. 320 runs against Australia in Mohali, 2008

Australia toured India for a Test series in 2008. One of the Tests in the series was played in Mohali on the 17th of October. India dominated Australia in the series which was the farewell series for Anil Kumble. The former India skipper finished his career on a high as India won the series. The match in Mohali was won by India by a margin of 320 runs. 

4. 321 runs against New Zealand in Indore, 2016

New Zealand faced India in Indore on the 8th of October in 2016. The home side ended up winning the series by a margin of 3-0. The match in Mohali witnessed India hammering the Kiwis by a whopping 321 runs. The batting performances from Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane, and the bowling performance of Ravichandran Ashwin helped India to dominate the match. 

3. 337 runs against South Africa in Delhi, 2015

The match between India and South Africa in Delhi took place on the 3rd of December 2015. The match witnessed a brilliant defensive partnership between Hashim Amla and Ab De Villiers after Ajinkya Rahane scored twin hundreds. However, Ravichandran Ashwin’s brilliant spell ensured a big win for India. The win by a margin of 337 runs remained the biggest for six years. 

2. 372 runs against New Zealand in Mumbai, 2021

The match between India and South Africa in Delhi took place on the 3rd of December 2015. There was a history in the making, as Ajaz Patel was only the third bowler and the first-ever Kiwi to register a ten-wicket haul in a Test spell. Despite the efforts of Ajaz, India won the match comfortably. They registered the biggest win in terms of runs (372 runs) back in 2021.

India’s latest win against England saw them hammering the visiting side by a whopping 424 runs. The match started on the 15th and ended on the 18th of February in 2024. It is one of the biggest wins for a team in Tests in terms of the number of runs. The batting performances from Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sarfaraz Khan, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja helped India to win the match.
