On 27 July 2023, India took on West Indies in the first game of the three-match ODI series in Bridgetown. India won the match by five wickets but some decisions from Rohit Sharma left fans surprised. First, Sanju Samson got neglected once again as Ishan Kishan got selected as the wicketkeeper. Yuzvendra Chahal also missed the playing XI as Kuldeep Yadav got the nod ahead of him.

When they came out to chase, Ishan came out to open instead of Rohit with Shubman Gill. Even, after that, both Rohit and Virat Kohli did not come out to bat despite losing wickets. Finally, Rohit came out to bat at the number seven position. While players like Shardul Thakur, Hardik Pandya, and Ravindra Jadeja got promoted ahead of them.

Here is the shared tweet:

“We said that we wanted to give a chance to the guys.” – Rohit Sharma

Regarding such decisions, a famous Pakistan journalist, Farid Khan came up with a rant on Rohit and shared his thoughts on social media. He wrote: “If Rohit really wanted to give youngsters a fair chance then why is he playing against a team which is not even part of the World Cup in first place? Bench yourself, play Sanju Samson and give Pandya the captaincy. Don’t hide yourself at No. 7 and make it worse! Simple! #WIvIND.” Seeing that, fans came up and slammed the journalist brutally on social media.

Speaking of the match, Rohit won the toss and opted to bowl first. While batting first, the Windies got bundled out for just 114 runs in 23 overs. In reply, India experimented with their batting lineup and despite losing five wickets, in the end, they chased down the target convincingly in 22.5 overs. Regarding this batting order, Rohit Sharma said: “We said that we wanted to give a chance to the guys. Never thought we’d lose five wickets but it was a good chance to give a chance to a lot of the guys who have just come in. I thought restricting them to 115 got us in a commanding position that we needed so we thought we could give those guys a chance who haven’t played a lot in the last few weeks.”
