Shakib was always the main choice: Nazmul Hassan

Apart from the two major events Bangladesh will also play a 3-match ODI series at home against New Zealand before they will travel to India for the ODI World Cup. Shakib has led the Bangladesh team earlier as well, he was first appointed as the captain in 2009 and his last match as Bangladesh skipper was in 2017.

BCB president Hassan further talked about Shakib and said that there was no confusion about appointing Shakib as captain. He believes that there were no choices other than Shakib who can lead the team right now. However, they will also be taking an eye on Iqbal who is currently suffering from an injury and an opening spot is still vacant.

“There was never any confusion. I told you before. He is the obvious choice. Who else can lead? But we had to talk to him before appointing him. Nobody should think anything else. Shakib is the captain. He was always the main choice. They have just one spot open. We still don’t know about Tamim Iqbal who is recovering from a back injury. We might trial one or two openers in the Asia Cup,” he said.
