In an extraordinary display of batting prowess, India’s star batters Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer made a mockery of the Australia bowling lineup in the 2nd ODI of the ongoing 3-match ODI series. The contest is taking place at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on Sunday, September 24.

Asked to bat first, India suffered an early setback as they lost their opener Ruturaj Gaikwad in the 4th over of the innings. However, the early loss didn’t affect the Indian batters much as Gill and Iyer both started dealing with boundaries only and stitched a 200-run stand for the 2nd wicket.

Iyer looked different as he was batting with an extra aggressive approach and smashed a brilliant century. He played a magnificent knock of 105 runs off just 90 balls which included 11 fours and 3 sixes. With this century, he has announced that he is here to play in the middle-order in the upcoming ODI World Cup.

Gill continued his brilliance

The young sensation, Gill also hit an outstanding century and played a brilliant knock of 104 runs off 97 balls which included 6 fours and 4 sixes. He has also etched his name in the annals of cricket history. Gill’s remarkable performance in the ODI format during this year has seen him equal the legendary Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting’s astounding world record for the most centuries scored at home in a single calendar year.

The 1200-run milestone in ODIs is now well within Gill’s reach, as he has notched up an impressive four centuries while playing on home soil. This achievement puts him on par with Ponting’s 2007 record and the Pakistani cricket great Zaheer Abbas, who initially accomplished this feat back in 1982.

In his wake, Gill has left behind the likes of cricketing icons such as Sachin Tendulkar, who managed three centuries in 1996, as well as modern-day greats like Virat Kohli (2017), Rohit Sharma (2017), and Babar Azam (2022). Gill’s remarkable run has undoubtedly solidified his status as a rising star in the world of cricket.

His inability to accelerate scoring when required drew ire from fans and analysts alike, with many questioning his intent and decision-making under pressure.

While Rizwan’s cautious approach ensured some stability, it proved inadequate against South Africa’s aggressive game plan. Some commentators were particularly scathing, questioning how Rizwan could reflect on his effort given the circumstances.

The incident has added to the scrutiny of Pakistan’s overall performance in the tournament, with many demanding better strategies and execution from key players.
